The Item: News - Jury selection begins in Melvin case: "Jury selection is slated to get under way at 9:30 a.m. today in the trial of Edgar Jerome Melvin, the 47-year-old former Lee County sheriff who is facing 47 counts related to alleged racketeering, money laundering and narcotics trafficking.
Melvin was arrested early on May 1 at a Little John Lane home in Sumter by agents from the State Law Enforcement Division and FBI. Authorities claim Melvin, reportedly known as 'Big Dog,' was involved in a conspiracy of dealing drugs as well as protecting drug dealers while accepting kickbacks and bribes.
A total of 14 people were arrested along with Melvin in a roundup; all of Melvin's co-defendants have pleaded guilty and are cooperating with prosecutors. If convicted, Melvin faces a minimum of 30 years in"
