The Item: News - Bishopville residents voice concern about bypass project

"...More than 125 people packed the cafeteria at Lee Central High School on Tuesday night to learn more about the proposed Bishopville bypass project.

Most residents left the meeting saying they need more information. Some voiced concerns about all or portions of the project while others said they are in favor of routing traffic around Main Street.

Project Manager Tyke Redfearn of the South Carolina Department of Transportation said DOT will determine the exact route of the bypass after completing environmental studies and receiving public input.

In a 10-minute presentation on Tuesday night, Redfearn presented a tentative timeline for the project.

Public input and the environmental study is under way now and will continue until the fall of 2011, he said. Right-of-way acquisition is scheduled to begin the summer of 2012 and continue until the fall of 2013. Construction could begin in the fall of 2013 and continue to the fall of 2015.

All public comments must be received by Nov. 5, Redfearn said..."
