U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said Wednesday a Sept. 21 sentencing hearing has been scheduled in Spartanburg for former Union County Sheriff Howard Wells.
Wells pleaded guilty in January to lying to agents about money he loaned in exchange for interest he didn't report as taxable income. He faces up to five years in prison.
Wells was propelled into the national spotlight in 1994 when Susan Smith confessed to him she had strapped her young sons into their car seats and let the car roll into a lake. Smith originally told investigators the boys were taken in a carjacking.
Several other Union County officials are also scheduled to be sentenced at the"
