The Item: News - 5 Dems face off in sheriff primary for Lee County

"(Captain Tillman) Smith, a Lee County native and a 1985 graduate of Robert E. Lee Academy, said he is the best person to 'bring positive change to the sheriff's office.'

Simon has failed to provide effective leadership during his tenure as acting sheriff, Smith said.

'I haven't heard anybody say they're happy with the changes Simon has put in,' he said. 'I'm getting the same complaints now as we heard with Melvin. People are concerned about the drug problem. There's no follow-up after an officer writes up the incident report. There's lack of drug enforcement.'"
