Zuill Bailey, Sr

Many of you will remember Zuill Bailey, BHS class of 1958 who grew up on Cousar Street in Bishopville and whose local fame was that of being a remarkable table tennis (Ping-Pong) player and promising musical student under the direction of W. W. Tisdale.

This morning I received a phone call from Zuill who happened to be in Bishopville visiting with his mother who will be 97 years young in July. Zuill and his wife Lana will be traveling to Spartanburg to be with their famous son, Zuill Bailey, Jr. who is a widely celebrated cellist and who will be performing with the Spartanburg Philharmonic Symphony, Saturday, Mar 28 7:30pm at Converse College: Twichell Auditorium, Spartanburg, SC.

Zuill and I did not get to talk at length but our short phone conversation revealed that our old friend still has the same throaty laughter and inquisitive nature as he did when we both haunted the highways and byways of Lee County during our formative years. Zuill and his wife Lana are accomplished musicians in their own right and maybe, just maybe they will grant me the privilege of an interview for the Natives of Lee County South Carolina blog.
