Anne Merck McDowell

Bishopville, SC 

Anne Merck McDowell, 77, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. She was born May 5, 1931, in Hartsville, SC, a daughter of the late Harry Wesley Merck and Ruth King Merck. 

Anne was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Elliott, SC. She was an avid gardener and loved tending to her orchids. A graduate of Coker College, she maintained close ties to the Alumni Association and her many college friends. Anne taught at Robert E. Lee Academy in Bishopville, SC, from its opening in 1966 until her retirement in 1996. 

Survivors include Edward Davis (Mickey) McDowell, her husband of 55 years; three daughters, Vicki M. Carter (Brantley) of Timmonsville, Cindy M. Bolt of Greenville, Lisa M. Lanning (Tad) of Rock Hill; one son Davy McDowell (Caroline); and nine grandchildren; Forrest Carter, Casey Carter, Matt (Brittany) Bolt, Kelleigh Bolt, Spencer Lanning, Alison Lanning, Emily McDowell, Catherine McDowell, and Anna McDowell. 

Anne is also survived by two brothers; John Merck (Carolyn) of Alexandria, VA, and Jim Merck (Peggy) of Piedmont, and one sister-in-law, Betty S. Merck of Columbia. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert (Bobby) Merck. 

Visitation will be held Friday evening, March 13, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home in Bishopville. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 14, at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, 4544 St. Charles Road, Bishopville.

A Memorial service will be held at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Elliott, SC, on Sunday, March 15, at 11:00 am.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of the arrangements.
